Big Sky Audio is a purpose built, multi room recording facility located 30 kms West of the Melbourne CBD. The control room and studios were designed from the ground up to be versatile and flexible so you have the choice of recording a bands performance 100% live, or using the extensive tie lines and patching system to isolate as you please.
The control room was built around a 38 Channel MCI 500 Series recording console, which was manufactured in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1978, and spent it’s formative years in Devonshire Sound Studios in Nth. Hollywood where it was involved in the music of Weather Report, Billy Joel, The Ramones, Cher, Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Jackson Five and many more.
Around this time it’s 500 series siblings were busy all over the world recording the albums of the decade by artists such as Grace Jones, The Police, Godley and Creme, Bob Marley, AC/DC, The Eagles, The Bee Gees, X-pensive Winos, Queen, The Who, Led Zepplin, Joe Walsh, Talking Heads, The Rolling Stones, B-52’s etc.
At the heart of that classic MCI sound are the transformers on all inputs and outputs, as well as the great sounding mic pres and EQ’s, yep, that sound all the latest plugins are trying to emulate.
Main monitors are flush mounted Tannoy HPD-315, 12’s powered by a Yamaha PC2002M power amp, and in conjunction with the optimally dimensioned and tuned control room, the resulting sound is accurate and revealing.
A/D and D/A conversion is provided by an Antelope Orion 32+ Gen 3, 32 channel interface, so for visiting engineers who prefer to work on their own DAW, or plan to track then continue work on the project elsewhere, it is as simple as downloading and installing the Orion drivers (Thunderbolt or USB) and having full access to our system.
There are also plenty of in-house mics, outboard, amps and instruments available to use so check out our comprehensive Equipment List for all the finer details and get in touch if you would like to discuss rates….
